Place systems for heritage and destinations

Cultural and destination experiences become more useful when story, geography and wayfinding are treated as one connected interface.

Heritage and destination projects are often divided between a map, a brochure, a ticketing journey and a separate interpretation layer. Visitors experience the place as one thing, but the digital system presents it as several unrelated products.

Our place-system work explores a different structure. A geographic scene is the shared substrate. Around it sit stories, routes, points of interest, accessibility information, event context and operational guidance. A visitor can learn where something is, why it matters and how to reach it without leaving the experience.

The business value is not only visual appeal. The same foundation can support a public-facing discovery journey, an internal content workflow and a wayfinding service. That creates a stronger case for maintaining the spatial data because more than one audience benefits from it.

The research question is how much interpretation should be automated. AI can help classify, translate and retrieve, but cultural authority, historical nuance and accessibility review remain human responsibilities. A useful place system makes that boundary visible.

Business relevance

A place system can support visitor discovery, accessibility planning, destination marketing, cultural interpretation and operational wayfinding from the same spatial foundation. The value is in connecting those journeys instead of commissioning isolated microsites.

Evidence boundary
  • - Public concepts include Expo 2030 exploration, Smart Wayfinder, Heritage, Qafila 3D, MirageMaps MENA and King Salman Park.
  • - The current evidence is a portfolio of live experiences and prototypes; visitor behaviour and commercial outcomes are not yet published.
  • - Accessibility, multilingual content and validated destination data remain important pilot requirements.
